Cozad-Cover House is located in Andrews, North Carolina. Andrews is also know as “Valley Town” because of its location in a picturesque smoky mountain valley. It is framed by the Snowbird Mountains on the north, the Valley River Mountains on the south, and the Nantahala Mountains to the east. Murphy, the county seat, is located approximately 15 miles west further down the valley.

Andrews was established with the arrival of the railroad in 1890. This standard gauge railroad and numerous narrow gage lumber lines running into remote areas saw the Valley and much of western North Carolina prosper during the timber operations of the early part of the twentieth century. It was at this time that Samuel Cover, original owner of the Cozad-Cover house began his successful tannery business.

The area now provides a gateway to launch your smoky mountain adventure. A variety of fun-filled activities in the region provides something for everyone….

Whitewater sports – World class kayaking, rafting, and canoeing on many of the areas white water rivers including the all new class V rapids of the Cheoah River.

Fishing – seven area lakes offer 30,000 acres of water to fish by boat for excellent populations of bass, bluegill, walley, crappie, and catfish. Hundred of miles of trout steams offer anglers the chance to catch brown, rainbow, and native brook, or speckled trout. The Nantahala River is rated as one of the top 100 trout fisheries in the country. Nantahala Lake is the highest recreational lake east of the Mississippi and contains Kokanee salmon.

Motorcycle and Sportcar Touring – travel beautiful back road byways such as the mile high Cherohala Skyway and the world famous Tail of the Dragon with 318 curves in 11 miles. The nearby Tellico ORV Area is famous for being some of the best 4x4 offroading and in the country.

Galleries, Crafts, Drama – A number of galleries offer local, regional, and national artwork. Arts tour, Highland Games. The John C. Campbell Folk School, located in Nearby Brasstown, was founded in 1925, and offers classes in Appalachian Mountain handicrafts. Several area theatres offer amply opportunity to experience live drama.

Members of the Cherokee Indian Nation still live in the Snowbird Mountains. The area preserves Cherokee history, Native American crafts and culture. The Trail of Tears, a national historic trail and a testament of Cherokee perserverance, runs from Robbinsville, over Tatham Gap and through the Valley. For over 50 years, the story of the Trail of Tears has been depicted in an outdoor, mountainside drama – Unto these Hills. The play is held during the summers months at nearby Cherokee. The more modern reservation area has ushered in local casinos, including Harrah’s located downtown Cherokee.

Scottish Games – in September, the Town of Andrews celebrates the strong local line to Scottish ancestry with adult and school-age competitive games. The music of bag pipes can be enjoyed along with food and souvenirs.

Andrews-Murphy Airport is a public airport used for private and commercial singe and multi-engine planes. The airport is utilized by five counties because of its convenient location just two miles west of the Andrews city limits.
